Surveying the field: Building a thematic research overview using topic modeling techniques

In the course of its funding period, the meta-project initiates an exploration of the field of language education in the immigration society and the developments within the funding directive. It contextualizes the state of research within a comprehensive scientific and societal framework.

To achieve this, the project team applies topic modeling methods to analyze the research proposals of the 10 individual and collaborative projects, as well as the research literature cited in the proposals. Through this statistical analysis, thematic patterns and the thematic proximity or distance between the projects can be identified and illustrated. At the same time, the entire research literature underlying the funding directive is clustered thematically.

In order to continuously document the state of research and to illustrate the progress of the research field, the data on the state of research and the statistical analyses will be continuously updated until the end of the funding period in 2028. This will be done through regular literature surveys of the funded projects.

The thematic research overview will be conducted at the Mercator Institute for Literacy and Language Education in Cologne.
